We are a small total immersion early childhood centre in the heart of Te Awahou (Foxton) working to revitalise te reo Māori me ona tikanga within our community. We provide mana enhancing environments, relationships and learning opportunities underpinned by Tikanga tuku Iho, Raukawatanga and Te Whāriki - Te Ara Māori.
Our aim is to ensure that our tamariki, whānau, and community have a place where they belong, a place where they can learn and grow gaining the skills and knowledge needed to stand confident in who they are. We achieve this by weaving whanaungatanga, te reo, whakapapa, wairuatanga, kotahitanga, ukaipōtanga, pūkengatanga, kaitiakitanga, rangatiratanga and manaakitanga through every aspect of our being. We are inclusive of all cultures, and welcome all tamariki and whānau wanting to begin or continue their journey in te ao Māori. Together we can revitalise and build a community where te taha tinana, te taha wairua, te taha hinengaro and te taha whānau are protected enhanced and enriched. Kia whakamanahia te tangata ahakoa ko wai.
Goals
The goals of Te Pā Harakeke o Te Awahou will align with the Guiding Principles of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga:
The people are our wealth; to develop and retain
The Māori language is a taonga; to halt its decline and revive
The marae is our principal home; maintain and respect it
Self determination
To attain the Guiding Principles we follow the values of Raukawatanga.
Kaitiakitanga - The preserver and guardian of cultural knowledge. The preservation of taonga, te reo, tikanga tuku iho, kōrero ā-iwi. ensuring quality and safety in all activities.
Te Reo – The Māori language is the paramount source of communication and survival in all learning.
Whanaungatanga – The promoter of kinship, rangatahi, interdependence and obligations, whānau, hapū, iwi.
Ūkaipōtanga – Believer in maintaining Te Pā Harakeke Puna Reo as a source of strength and unity. An important contribution to the survival of Ngāti Raukawa - whānau, hapū and iwi.
Kotahitanga – Development and encouragement of unity and harmony within their own whānau, all whānau of te Pā Harakeke, hapū, iwi and the Māori Community of Te Awahou.
Manaakitanga – The expression of generosity towards others i.e caring, generous, respectful, acting in mana-enhancing ways towards each other.
Pūkengatanga – Teaching, learning, preserving and creating knowledge and understanding Matauranga Māori (Māori world view).
Whakapapa – Recognise and promote the importance of a Māori world-view where time is not lineal, where the past and future are here in the present, and relationships established aeons ago in a spiritual realm are as vital as any other.
Rangatiratanga – the demonstration of qualities of a rangatira i.e. trustworthy, reliability, commitment, generosity, leadership, humility, reputable.
Wairuatanga – Nurturing and nourishing the taha wairua of the tamaiti, spiritually connected to people, places and things that surround them in their everyday learning.
